TITLE: Staff Attorney

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Represent and provide legal advice to KASB and Association members on all legal topics
Prepare legal opinions and other legal documents in a timely manner
Develop ideas for, write and/or edit Association legal publications
Plan, prepare material, and make presentations at the Association’s legal seminars and school in-
service programs
Provide legal representation in administrative and court proceedings
Provide a full range of on-site legal services, including but not limited to: reviewing agreements; advising school boards and administrators on a wide variety of legal issues; representing member districts before administrative, district and appellate courts; and assisting member districts with board policies; negotiations including mediation and fact finding; special education and student discipline hearings; and employee investigation and termination matters.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide support to Governmental Relations Department in Association’s lobbying activity
Assist all KASB departments with legal issues confronting their department
Assist in preparing marketing materials for legal publications and seminars
Participation in the department’s reporting and planning efforts
Other duties as assigned
CRITICAL SKILLS:
Possess and maintain licensure with state and federal courts to practice law in the state of Kansas
Possess a valid Kansas driver’s license with the ability to drive an automobile at all hours, travel on short notice and spend multiple days away from home including nights and weekends
Ability to speak clearly and audibly, with or without electronic assistance, to varying size groups expressing ideas in a logical and forthright manner
Possess composition skills suitable for producing written communication for a variety of readers
Ability to quickly analyze a situation and provide prompt legal advice
Ability to respond to information requests in a courteous, timely and helpful manner
Ability to perform job responsibilities using appropriate software on Association computer
system and communication equipment
Ability to manage job responsibilities while meeting established deadlines
Ability to work constructively and cooperatively with others
JOB LOCATION:
Primary office is in Topeka, KS. KASB seminars, regional meetings, other meetings and legal services require evening work and travel throughout the state. Legal services are to be provided at the school district site when requested by the district.
